Health Care Legislation

The Health Care Team (thanks to Annette DeMartine) is tracking this year’s health care legislation – targeting those that LWVCO supports (just to highlight a few):
  • SB 24 allows behavioral health providers to participate in loan repayment programs in exchange for practicing in health professional shortage areas.
  • SB 22 puts parameters around new opioid prescriptions, as a part of an overall effort to counter the opioid addiction and dependence crisis.
  • HB 1118 creates a legislative committee to study health care issues affecting CO residents.
  • HB 1149 continues indefinitely the Consumer Insurance Council of the Division of Insurance to enhance the consumer voice in insurance.
Fred Garcia from our Team participated in the Mental Health & Addictions Day at the Capitol & met with local legislators to update them on Larimer County behavioral health activities.

Big Pharma

The Team is planning to present the DVD, “Big Pharma,” which deals with the high cost of prescription drugs, this spring.  We also are coordinating with Laurie Stolen, Larimer County’s Behavioral Health Specialist, to plan a fall program on behavioral health in Loveland.

HealthCare for the US Coalition

Several members have been participating on a national monthly conference call of local Leaguers, Health Care For the US.  Those on the call are planning to host an Improved Medicare for All caucus at the LWVUS convention in Chicago in June.

Write to your Commissioner

The Health Care Team encourages all Leaguers to write County Commissioners about the importance of developing a November 2018 ballot issue for a detox facility in Larimer County.  Please write to:  bocc@larimer.org or go on the website to use the contact form:  https://www.larimer.org/contact
