The League of Women Voters of Larimer County strongly supports Larimer County ballot measure 1B proposing a .25% county sales/use tax to fund local early-childhood care and education.
Improving public policy on childcare has been a high-priority goal for League of Women Voters advocacy efforts since the 1980s. In 2025, childcare remains an elusive but critically needed support service for women seeking employment – and not just women. Addressing this critical need, the League has long advocated in support of programs, services, and policies at all levels of government to expand the supply of affordable, quality childcare for all who need it in order to increase access to employment, to prevent and reduce poverty, and to protect children at risk. We believe that employer contributions and private philanthropy have their roles to play in making quality childcare available for all, but we also support the use of public funds and public facilities to broaden offerings. This ballot measure aligns with these decades-old League positions.
The League supports this measure because:
- Many families face long waiting lists and unaffordable costs. This initiative will help relieve these pressures by expanding the supply of care and reducing financial barriers.
- Stable funding will allow providers to pay competitive wages, improve training and retain qualified staff that will strengthen the backbone of the early childhood system.
- Families with low incomes, single parents, and those in rural and underserved areas are most impacted by child care shortages. This measure helps ensure all families have access to opportunities for their children.
For these reasons the League of Women Voters of Larimer County urges voters to vote YES on Ballot Issue 1B – Help Larimer Kids Thrive. This measure represents a critical investment in the futures of our children, families and communities.
