The November 3 election is approaching, and the Voter Services team is preparing trusted, nonpartisan resources for our community. We need your help! Here are some ways to get involved:
1. Support Ballot Issues Presentations
Become a presenter. Help community members understand the measures on their ballots and the potential impacts. Presenters typically work in pairs, and training and materials will be provided in September by the League of Women Voters, with presentations taking place during the month of October.
Connect us with your community. Think about the neighborhood associations, civic organizations, service clubs, workplaces, and other groups in your network. Would they benefit from a nonpartisan ballot issues presentation?
2. Volunteer at a Candidate Forum
We are hosting forums for candidates running for the Colorado Senate, Colorado House, and Larimer County offices. Volunteers are essential to keeping these events running smoothly.

For the 7th year of exploring local women’s history, and in celebration of Women's Equality Day, the Archive and Collections staff of the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery will highlight many local luminaries in an inspirational evening presentation.
Fascinating stories, audio recordings and historic photographs of notable Fort Collins women will be shared in the immersive OtterBox Digital Dome Theater.
Additionally there's a virtual “walking” tour of historic sites related to Women’s Suffrage in Fort Collins, presented by our friends at the City of Fort Collins Historic Preservation Services.
All ages welcome!

Mapping the forces shaping AI

On August 18 (Tuesday) at 4:30, the News Access and Literacy Task Force will welcome Sophia Wang and Anushree Chaudhuri to discuss their Mapping AI project, which tracks the organizations, policymakers, and public figures shaping the future of the technology -- and where they stand on regulation, risk, and governance.
Anushree Chaudhuri is a doctoral candidate at the University of Cambridge, where she researches large-scale energy infrastructure. Sophia Wang is a research associate at Outliers Fund, a venture capital firm focused on emerging technologies.
Anushree and Sophia will give us an overview of their project, define some of the terms they use in the project, and show us how to use the tool.

TOPIC: TRAINING: Becoming a Confident and Effective Privacy Advocate
This meeting will feature an ALPR/Flock community advocacy training event geared toward empowering League members to speak with others in their networks and communities—including elected officials–about this increasingly important issue and the threats it poses to constitutional privacy guarantees. The training will include the following topics:
- What is the real threat posed by ALPR/Flock systems?
- What does the Constitution and the Supreme Court say about digital mass surveillance?
- What are the types of actions that cities and counties can take to restore privacy to residents and reduce mass surveillance?
- How can League members empower officials to take these actions?
- How do you know what types of strategies to pursue in your city or county?
- What to expect when you become a privacy advocate.
If you want to help end mass surveillance and protect constitutional liberties, and are curious about what makes an effective privacy advocate, this training was designed for you! Join us and others interested in this issue to help strengthen LWVLC privacy advocacy in our region.
UPDATE: National Day of Action on Voter Rights/Voter Rights and Safety event
On Saturday, August 8, LWVLC, in partnership with the Latinx Community Network (LCN), hosted a 90-minute panel discussion on voting rights and voter safety in Larimer County ahead of the midterm elections.
Panelists included:
- State Senator Cathy Kipp, District 14
- Fort Collins Mayor Pro Tem Julie Pignataro
- Larimer County Commissioner Jody Shadduck-McNally
- Patricia Alvarez Harrell, Executive Director, Alianza NORCO
- Aaron Escobedo Garmon, Community Organizer
Larimer County Clerk and Recorder Tina Harris also attended and contributed to the discussion.
With more than 55 people in attendance, the event helped foster trust and dialogue between Larimer County residents, community leaders, and elected officials while also bringing forward the deep fear and concern many community members feel about the upcoming election. All of the panelists took these concerns seriously. Patricia Alvarez Harrell and Aaron Escobedo Garmon, in particular, reminded attendees that a right guaranteed on paper is not always equally accessible in practice, especially for historically disenfranchised members of the community.
There was broad agreement that this event should be the beginning of a longer conversation. The new connections strengthened between LWVLC and LCN will also help support efforts to ensure that eligible voters throughout Larimer County are able to register, participate, and cast their ballots in the midterm election.
Thank you to everyone who attended, participated in the discussion, and continues to work toward protecting the rights and safety of every eligible voter in our community.

The South Larimer Discussion Group is looking for a new leader! After faithfully serving the group for many years, Fran Feinerman has stepped down from the leadership role, and the group needs someone to keep this community connection going strong.
The South Larimer Discussion Group began in 2017 as an informal gathering of Larimer League of Women Voters members living in Loveland, Berthoud, Johnstown, and neighboring areas. Since then, it has provided a welcoming space for members to focus on citizenship through education and fact-finding — exactly the kind of grassroots engagement that makes the League so valuable.
If you're interested in leading or co-leading this group, please reach out to Fran for more information about what the role involves. This is a great opportunity to get more involved, build connections with fellow members in your area.

The goal of our 5-part series, Is Media Ruining America? is to help you become a discerning news consumer who can easily spot misinformation.
Recordings of each part of this 5-part series are now available to League members and the public. You can find them on our YouTube page here.
The series includes:
- a discussion of history of fake news,
- tips on how to recognize bias,
- tips on how to spot fake news,
- a discussion of the the impact of AI on our democracy, and
- an expert panel that helps tie together all of the above.
Please share this information with anyone interested in becoming a better news consumer.

League Name Tags - The necklace name tags will continue to be available at League General Meetings this year. For members who would like to have a magnetic name tag, the cost is $10.
If you would like to order one, please send your name and request to Linda Mahan at membership@lwv-larimercounty.org by September 3. When the tags are ready for pickup members will be notified and payment will be through our League’s website.
