Second Chance! Religious Freedom Study Team Presentation
Tuesday, February 25
6:30 p.m.

Work is underway by a LWVCO study group to research the need for a LWVCO position statement on the separation of church and state. The study group is concerned that the separation of church and state, as described in the First Amendment, is currently threatened by religious nationalism.

All Colorado Leagues will be casting votes on this position through a statewide voting period that will be open March 1 - 31, 2025. The LWVLC will be organizing a vote among its members near the end of February to enable our League to cast its single, collective vote at the state level during that period.

To prepare for that vote, LWVLC members will have another opportunity to see the study team's presentation and discuss the topic, consensus questions, and proposed position on February 25, when LWVCO will hold a statewide meeting via Zoom.

You can register here and find more information here.

"Counted Out" Special Screening
Sunday, March 9
2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

On March 9, there will be a special screening of “Counted Out," hosted by the League of Women Voters of Boulder County, Longmont Public Media, and the Longmont Museum. The event will be held at the Longmont Museum, 400 Quail Road, Longmont.
Counted Out is the story of math and democracy. In the 21st Century, our world is dominated by technology, data, and algorithms, yet we maintain the persistent myth that not everyone is a “math person.” Can changing our minds about math revolutionize who has power and who is counted out? This event is FREE and open to the public.

You can register here

Statement of LWVUS CEO Celina Steward in Response to Actions of the New Administration

February 6, 2025

WASHINGTON — Today, the League of Women Voters of the United States CEO Celina Stewart issued the following statement in response to actions taken by the new administration and the impact on voters.

“In the first 17 days of the Trump administration, we’ve witnessed nothing short of the weaponization of government against Americans. The callousness of the most recent actions, including the terrorizing of the immigrant community, shows a blatant disregard for the well-being of the American people. We’ve seen the weakening of the Department of Justice’s civil rights work, continued attacks on people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community, and the elimination and freezing of humanitarian aid to other countries. These efforts are dangerous for our country, compromising our international ally relationships and putting many Americans’ livelihoods at stake.

“As an organization committed to empowering voters and defending democracy, the League is outraged by the current administration’s actions against the American people. We are equally concerned about the inaction of our elected officials in Congress to exercise their constitutional authority and put a stop to this attack on democratic institutions, Americans, and the rule of law.

“Over the past few weeks, we’ve witnessed a number of alarming actions from the executive branch met with little response from our elected officials in Congress. All members of Congress have a responsibility to serve the people they represent and swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. Congress is undermining the system of checks and balances upon which this country was founded by not responding to the executive branch’s violation of the law and encroachment on its authority. We call on Congress to act now to stop the infringement on its legislative authority and respond to the ongoing assault on our democracy on behalf of the American people.

“For over a century, the League has remained steadfast in our commitment to the American people and our democracy. President Trump’s latest actions put both in deep jeopardy. We call on our elected officials to stand up to tyranny, protect our democracy, and honor their oath to the American people.”

Help LWVCO Get the Colorado Voting Rights Act Passed!

Courts have been slowly eroding federal voting rights protections for years, and the Supreme Court scrapped major parts of the Federal Voting Rights Act. If we can’t count on federal protections, Colorado can act on our own and strengthen the right to vote by passing the Colorado Voting Rights Act. We're asking League members around the state to help through personal advocacy! Learn more here.

Beware Good Day News

As if local news needs one more problem…the ascent of Good Day News is becoming a thorn right here in Larimer County.

Good Day News is a network of AI-generated newsletters targeting small and medium news markets, including Pueblo and Fort Collins. Automated agents working out of New York curate the most relevant stories running in news markets throughout the country, summarize them, edit and approve the copy, format it into a newsletter, and publish.

We on the News Access and Literacy Task Force stress “local reporting” and “firsthand reporting” as two important qualities to seek when judging credible news. There is nothing local or firsthand about a New York-based business that operates by AI aggregation of stories in Fort Collins and surrounding areas. And newsletters that are merely AI aggregates of news already written are diversions in a market that simply cannot afford any distractions because it is already operating on a very thin shoestring.

Please, support local news by reading local news sources.

Want to Add Your Ideas for Use of the Former Hughes Stadium Site?

The Environmental Team of the LWVLC, in conjunction with the City of Fort Collins and the CSU Center for Public Deliberation, will hold small group discussions about potential future uses of the former Hughes Stadium site. The site was purchased by the City of Fort Collins following a 2021 ballot initiative, with the land designated for uses such as for parks, recreation, open lands, natural areas, and wildlife rescue and restoration.

Results of the League's discussions will be added to those from other input sessions being held across the City. The sessions will run from February 27 to March 5, with more information available soon.  You do not need to be a member or a resident of the City of Fort Collins to attend a session.
